Privacy Policy (iViking App)
1. UCC is the Data Controller and is responsible for managing data submitted through the app, including the storage and safeguarding of personal data. This project is led by Prof. Tom Birkett in UCC. 2. Personal Data Collected:
a. When first using the application, you will be asked to provide:
i. a username, used to attribute Submissions to contributors;
ii. an email address, used for verification purposes and communications about Submissions;
iii. nationality and age-range, used by the project researchers to understand who is using the app and to better tailor our responsive feedback.
b. Users will be able to opt out of non-essential email communication. Essential communication includes forgotten password emails.
c. Users will be able to opt out of providing nationality and age-range, by selecting ‘I’d rather not say’ from the drop-down options.
d. Email addresses:
i. will be stored securely on UCC servers and will only be accessible to the project researchers for the duration of the project;
ii. will not be shared with any third parties;
iii. will be retained for so long as you maintain an active account on the iViking app;
iv. will be deleted upon closure of your account or at the conclusion of the project, save as required by law.
e. All personal data collected through the iViking app will be deleted from UCC servers upon conclusion of the project, save as required by law.
3. Geolocation Data
Geolocation data provided by your device will be used to help us locate submitted images. Location access will only be enabled when you submit a photo. The application will not track users or provide any location information beyond the location of the photo at the time it is submitted. This functionality can also be opted out of by contributors at the point of Submission.
4. UCC processes your personal data on the basis of your consent, which you provide when agreeing to these terms and conditions to sign up to the iViking app. You may withdraw your consent pursuant to clause 16 of these terms and conditions.
5. Communications
a. We may contact you to request clarification about a Submission or to provide updates on the progress of the project and the way your Submissions have contributed to our goal of mapping the modern understanding of the Vikings.
b. If you do not wish to receive email communications from the NorseMap project, you may opt-out of non-essential communications at any time by adjusting your preferences or by emailing norsemap@ucc.ie with the subject line ‘Unsubscribe’.
c. If you wish to raise any matter in respect of this privacy notice, you can email norsemap@ucc.ie.
6. Your Data Protection Rights
1. Under the GDPR, you have many data protection rights, including the right to:
a. access your personal data held by the project (username, email address, and geolocation of images);
b. request correction of inaccurate data (such as the wrong tag applied to a photo you have submitted). Corrections can be made by emailing norsemap@ucc.ie;
c. request UCC to erase your personal data, under certain conditions;
d. request UCC to restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions;
e. object to the processing of your personal data by UCC, under certain conditions;
f. request that UCC transfer the personal data it has collected to another organisation, or directly to you, under certain conditions;
g. withdraw your consent to UCC processing your personal data.

3. Should you wish to report a complaint or if you feel that UCC has not addressed your concern in a satisfactory manner, you may contact the relevant data protection supervisory authority. In Ireland, the data protection supervisory authority is the Irish Data Protection Commission: Contact Us.
7. Right to Withdraw
1. You have the right to withdraw as a contributor to the NorseMap project at any time and to have your personal data deleted from the iViking app.
a. your username and email address will be permanently deleted from UCC records. To withdraw, email norsemap@ucc.ie with the subject line ‘Withdraw’;
b. UCC shall be entitled to continue using your previous Submissions (in relation to the NorseMap project or otherwise) pursuant to the terms of the CC BY-NC 4.0 License granted by you;
c. UCC shall not be required to remove your previous Submissions from the NorseMap archive pursuant to the terms of the CC BY-NC 4.0 License granted by you.
8. Changes to terms & conditions
1. UCC reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions. Where changes are made, UCC shall notify you by email 14 days in advance of the proposed changes.
2. If you do not accept the revised terms, you should withdraw from using the iViking app in accordance with clause 16.
3. Your continued use of the iViking app after the date on which the revised terms come into effect will constitute your acceptance of the revised terms and conditions.
9. Applicable Law
1. These terms & conditions shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Ireland, whose courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
2. While you are in another jurisdiction, any applicable laws of that jurisdiction shall continue to apply to your use of the iViking app and shall not be displaced by these terms and conditions.
3. For all other matters that are not required to be governed by local jurisdiction laws referenced in clause 18.2, the laws of Ireland shall apply. In the event of any uncertainty regarding which laws apply, the laws of Ireland shall apply.
10. Complaints
Any complaints in relation to your use of the iViking app can be made by email to norsemap@ucc.ie with the subject line ‘Complaint’.
11. Age Requirements and Consent
1. By using the iViking app, you confirm that you are 18 years of age or older. This app is not intended for use by persons under the age of 18. UCC reserves the right to require verification of age and to suspend or terminate the account of any user it reasonably believes to be under the age of 18.
2. By ticking the consent boxes and using the app, you confirm that you:
a. have read and agreed to these Terms and Conditions and to the Privacy Notice;
b. understand that by submitting Content to the iViking app, you are licensing image rights to UCC under a CC BY-NC 4.0 License (which is a worldwide, royalty-free, non-sublicensable, non-exclusive, irrevocable license);
c. allow geolocation of submitted images;
d. confirm that you are 18 years of age or older.
