- Description
- Screenshot of an Instagram post by Marsh’s Library, Dublin, reproducing an illustration from the Danish antiquarian Ole Worm’s Danicorum Monumentorum Libri Sex, published in Copenhagen in 1643. The illustration depicts the larger of the two Jelling runestones, erected by King Harald Bluetooth in the tenth century to commemorate his parents, Gorm and Thyra, and to proclaim his achievements in Denmark and Norway. The illustration shows two decorated faces of the stone, including the image of Christ and a quadruped entwined with a serpent, together with runic inscriptions. Worm’s publication was an important milestone in the documentation and interpretation of Scandinavian runic monuments.
